For millennia, the known world was a simple place. Inhabitants of all tongues called it Amairikashet, and it was bounded on the north by frigid expanses of ice shelves and and icy ocean. A few brave people ventured to the rugged west, with most of the populations based in the east. Great walls and plains of ice bounded the south, and those who explored more than a few days in that direction never returned.
With ice to the north and the south, cold but temperate wilderness to the west, and civilization expanding slowly from the east to the west, there were few strains on the varied populations other than the constant cold. There were of course evil men, evil elves, evil dwarves, and small battles happened occasionally between warring communities, but the oppressed and the oppressors could always expand north or west out of fear or greed, which acted as a pressure valve for any large-scale tensions.
